Hiring GenAI Engineers? This one question you could ask to separate the real talent from others.
GenAI engineering isn’t just about calling APIs or writing flashy prompts.
It’s about building real solutions that work for real users.
So, one question that could work is
– “What’s the most useful AI product you’ve built?”
This question is important because not all AI applications are useful.
You want builders who:
– can build for users, not just for a hackathon demo.
– can debug the problem, not just the code.
– can think in terms of systems, not just models.
– can understand edge cases and tradeoffs, not just the capabilities.
Additional things to check
– Combine Gen AI building blocks (RAG, agents, vector DBs, guardrails, security, deployment etc.) like Lego masters
– Use AI tools (like Cursor) to ship faster, but know when to take the wheel themselves
– Learn deeply. Not just consuming YouTube videos but digging into papers and repos.
Great AI engineering isn’t about adding AI everywhere, but about adding AI where it truly moves the needle.
