Apple is back in the AI race, but not the way you’d expect.

While other AI companies are making headlines with massive models and benchmark wars…

Apple has been unusually quiet.

Until now.

Last week, Apple quietly dropped major updates to its Foundation Models (AFM), signalling a bold new approach, one that’s tightly woven into the OS itself.

What’s new?

  • A brand new Foundation Models API for developers
  • Smarter on-device AI with a 3B parameter language model + 300M vision model
  • AFM models use compression down to 2 bits/weight to fit on mobile
  • No internet? No problem, models run locally with Apple Intelligence

But is it all perfect?
AFM-server still lags behind GPT-4o and others in “human evaluations”.

And the recent paper about Apple AI failing basic puzzles stirred controversy (and satire).

Having said that,

Apple might be late, but it’s playing a different game, one that’s efficient and developer-first.

And if your model ships with the OS, you don’t need to win the leaderboard to win the ecosystem.

What do you think, is Apple’s on-device AI a sleeping giant? or too little, too late?
